Grading system

Grading scales at Lund University

At Lund University, there are five different grading scales. The relevant faculty board decides which grading scale is to be used for which course. This means that one degree or transcript may include courses with different grading scales.?Please note that no overall grade is given for the degree and that the faculties generally do not provide grade conversions.

All grades at Lund University are criterion-referenced, i.e. awarded in relation to the student’s performance relative to the learning objectives set out in the course syllabus. They do not grade how well the student performs in relation to other students, but how well he or she fulfils the objectives of the course.

The grade distribution within the different grading scales is shown below. Grades are listed in order from the highest grade to the lowest. In the grade distribution tables only passing grades are shown, in accordance with the recommendations from the EU project Egracons.

The tables are not normative, but based on accumulated statistics from the grades awarded at the University as a whole during the academic years 2016–17?and 2017–18.

Student rights connected to grading

Under certain circumstances, students are entitled to the nomination of another examiner or to request that a grading decision be reconsidered.?

The right to request?another examiner

Students who have been examined twice on a course or a part of a course without obtaining a pass grade are entitled to the nomination of another examiner, unless there are special reasons to the contrary (Higher Education Ordinance 6:22). Students can turn to their student union or the course/programme coordinator to request the nomination of another examiner.

The right to request that a grading decision be reconsidered

Students cannot appeal a decision on grading, but can request that a grading decision be reconsidered. If an examiner finds that a decision on a grade is obviously incorrect owing to new circumstances or for some other reason, he or she shall change the decision if this can be done quickly and easily and if it does not mean lowering the grade (Higher Education Ordinance 6:24).
